How to use Straw Pelletz for bedding a horse?

How to use Straw Pelletz Large Animal Bedding

The details below will give you a general guideline on how to use Straw Pelletz for bedding your horses in stalls and trailers. Be sure to have fresh water and suitable hay available for your horse to eat while in the stall with Straw Pelletz bedding.

  1. No Ammonia Smell. Straw Pelletz absorb the nasty stench of ammonia. The urine “clumps” together and the manure will be EZ to find, pick up and throw out. The stall mats will be dry, even in an unheated barn or trailer in the winter.
  2. No Watering of Straw Pelletz Needed. When the horse walks on the Straw Pelletz they crumble, exposing their soft feel & super absorbency. Some pellets may remain in pellet form & will break down over time. If your horse lays down on them, they are soft & comfortable and will not hurt your horse.
  3. Reduced Dust. Using Straw Pelletz greatly improves the air quality as there is less dust to inhale. Your horse will be living in a much healthier environment!
  4. Clean up is EZ. It takes less time to clean each stall & your manure cart will collect only a small amount of waste! Whom ever cleans the stall will thank you!
  5. Manure Management. You will notice less material in your manure pile, as the Straw Pelletz bedding will remain in your stalls or horse trailers.
  6. Stall Upkeep. We suggest bedding a 12’x12’ stall with 6 of our 40lb bags. After 7 uses of the stall (ie. days, nights or just a few hours) add another 40 lb bag of pelletz – this way you maintain the bedding. When maintained you will keep the stall usable for months without having to strip the stall completely. There is a longevity to Straw Pelletz that no other product has….it is just straw, after all!!
  7. Stall Clean out. When you completely clean out the stall, remove all the urine & manure. You can immediately apply all the remaining product to any garden application. Yes, put it on your vegetable gardens, flower beds, planter pots, use as mulch around trees, it is immediately usable – no need to compost it….it is just straw, after all!!
  8. Trailers. We suggest putting 2 of our 40lb bags in per horse, spread it in the trailer so they can walk on it as they come in an out as well as when tied. This will allow the urine to be captured by the Straw Pelletz before it seeps under your floor mats – saving your floor from rotting through.
How to use Straw Pelletz in a pets litter box?

How to use Straw Pelletz Small Animal Litter

  1. To start, keep some of your current litter in the box & add an inch of Straw Pelletz over top. This lets your pets know it is still their box but things are a little different. Some pets adjust very easily and some take a little bit of time. Once your pets are completely using the Straw Pelletz, go ahead a completely clean out & sanitize the box, you will never have such an awful task as that to do again!
  2. Some pets (ie. cats) like to scratch around in the box before they do their business & then scratch again after…this may disturb the pee clumps. You will notice that the Straw Pelletz will break up into the fine material – it is still absorbent! The poops will be dusted with straw bits and you will find the pees – if left undisturbed – will be a puffy pile that clumps together (very technical description isn’t it – hehe)! You can collect and dispose of as you have been.
  3. When you start to smell the ammonia smell (a smell that you will not have missed one bit) please clean out the box and put in new Straw Pelletz. Remember you can put the used Straw Pelletz straight from your pets box into your flower beds, garden, lawn, in a composite bin or put in your city or towns composite collection containers…it is not garbage, it is reusable!! It is just straw!
  4. Not all pets urine has the same smell, some have stronger ammonia, often due to food or medication. The duration of use may reflect that. Also if your pets have access to outside – your box may last longer than a box for strictly indoor pets.
  5. A slotted litter scooper, tongs or a small solid spoon works on Straw Pelletz Small Animal Litter. Some owners have removed a few slats in the slotted scooper to allow the intact Straw Pelletz to fall through easier.
  6. When picking the box clean, you will see that it is not as dusty! If your pets pick up any straw bits on their paws, it should not track more than a step or two from the box. You certainly won’t find clumps of it stuck between their pads on their feet either (nor on your pillow were they finally got it out)! When I reference “Pets” on this FAQ I am referring to cats, dogs, pigs, gerbils, hamsters, caged birds, reptiles, turtles and any other pets you have! We hope you enjoy cleaning your pets litter box much more with Straw Pelletz Small Animal Litter.
How to use Straw Pelletz in the garden, flower pots and flower beds?

How to use Straw Pelletz for Gardening

  1. Straw Pelletz are a very effective weed deterrent when used in gardens as mulch. Apply a 1″ thick layer around your seed rows, be sure to leave room for the plant to emerge from the soil. When you water the Straw Pelletz they will expand to create a hydrated crust that weeds will not grow through (note…rooted weeds or grass will still come through, but will be easily removed).
  2. Straw Pelletz work great in planter pots, flower boxes and gardens to keep your plants hydrated. Prepare the location for your plant, put a 1″ layer of Straw Pelletz in the bottom of the hole before placing your plant, then add your plant and water. Please remember…Straw Pelletz absorb water and will expand 3-4 times their size, this may cause a plant to be ejected from the pot if adequate space is not left.
  3. Straw Pelletz are pH neutral and will add structure to your soil as they decompose. The golden colour of the Straw Pelletz will reflect the sunlight on to your plants making them very vibrant.
  4. Have issues with Slugs? We have heard that they do not like the texture of the Straw Pelletz and will not cross them to bother your plants.
  5. Straw Pelletz will help soil that is very clay like, it will add structure and nutrients to the ground, so you can easily harvest up your produce in the fall (without dynamiting them out of the clay soil).
  6. Strawberry plants love our Fine Processed Straw, it is very finely chopped straw that we make our Straw Pelletz from. It is also available for purchase.
